Festive trends: Styling your new-build home for Christmas
- 03 Dec 2020
We speak to the team at Claude Hooper, the interior designers behind our beautifully decorated show homes at our Windrush Place development in Witney, who reveal the festive trends to look out for this Christmas. Keep things cosy with festive furnishings Before it comes to your Christmas decorations, ‘winterproof’ your home to provide a comforting oasis you’ll want to escape to now the dark nights have drawn in. Knitted cushions, fur throws and cosy blankets added to seating areas, living rooms and in the bedroom create an inviting atmosphere. You can also add Christmas themed cushions and bedding. Keep a consistent colour scheme When it comes to decorating your home for Christmas, it’s all in the details. Whether you keep to traditional colours or opt for glittering golds and silvers, keep to a colour scheme with your Christmas tree decorations, festive garlands and wreaths and accessories. You could also match your gift wrap, bows and ribbons to your decorations to keep with the consistent theme. Decorate your Christmas tree(s) When it comes to choosing your Christmas tree, an artificial version can look just as spectacular as a real one. Choose and spend wisely: it’s an investment that can be used again and again. With people going bigger and better than ever before, households are putting up more than one tree. You could have a more formal tree in the living room, while the children could help decorate a tree in the kitchen or play room. If space is an issue, there are plenty of styles that don’t take a lot of room, including deconstructed or peg board trees hung on the wall and slim or ‘half tree’ that will fit perfectly in corners of your home. Again, keep to your theme when it comes to decorating your Christmas tree. In The Aspen and The Cypress show home, Claude Hooper opted for a traditional, yet luxurious, approach using plenty of white lights (you can never have too many), velvet textures and glass baubles. Create Christmassy kerb appeal Creating a festive wreath by using natural, foraged materials such as twigs, ivy and holly, looks wonderfully rustic and makes a great first impression hung up on the front door. Lanterns – with wax candles or battery powered versions – stood beside the entrance, in the porch or dotted in the front garden look warm and inviting. More can be added through the hallway and throughout the house to continue the wonderfully festive atmosphere you’ve created outside. Add festive touches throughout the home It’s not only about the Christmas tree; there’s plenty you can do throughout the house to make the most of the festivities. A garland – filled with white lights and baubles – can be wrapped round the staircase, as well as nestled into the windowsill, around the fireplace and on top of cabinets. Full and lush, faux eucalyptus has been a popular choice this year for garlands. For an alternative to an ordinary chocolate-filled advent calendar, place a ladder rack in the hallway and tie small gift bags up for little ones to enjoy every day. Ensure it’s in keeping with your decorations to keep to your theme. A snow-dusted effect and lit-up gold stars in the windows are a simple, budget-friendly way to add further festive touches to your home. Dress your dining table for a special Christmas Day dinner Usually buried beneath turkey and all the trimmings, the dining table often gets neglected when it comes to decorations. A clear vase – filled with festive decorations – or a festive garland, if space allows, makes for a fantastic centre piece which will wow your guests. White lights and candles will make a great addition to this impressive display. And, remember, continue your consistent colour scheme when choosing your Christmas crackers. Those details make it look even more special. The Aspen and The Cypress show home, decorated for Christmas by Claude Hooper, can be found at our Windrush Place development, close to the picturesque market town of Witney in Oxfordshire. The location offers a collection of 2,3, 4 and 5-bedroom homes, all carefully designed to complement the charming surroundings.
