Bricklaying apprentice praises route into the industry

- 04 Feb 22

To mark National Apprenticeship Week (7th to 13th February), a 21 year old bricklaying apprentice at Bovis Homes’ Priory Fields development in Wells has praised the scheme for helping him train in his chosen trade. Josh Corp, who’s from Midsomer Norton, joined the company as an apprentice in August 2018. He has spent time studying at PGL Training in Exeter and has almost completed his NVQ level 2 qualification. Speaking about his experience, Josh said: “I’ve enjoyed my apprenticeship. I love studying while I work; earning and learning at the same time suits me perfectly. “Bovis Homes has really looked after me and working in Wells has given me an opportunity to help build thatched homes, which has been interesting. “I’d definitely recommend bricklaying as a career: you’re outside, doing physical work and it’s so satisfying to complete a job well – I definitely want to stay in the trade, it’s rare to find a job you love.” Now in its 15th year, National Apprenticeship Week aims to highlight the career path, which has seen a huge increase in employer support over the last decade and combines practical on-the-job training with formal qualifications. The theme for 2022 is ‘build the future’; reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and businesses to develop a talented workforce. Associate managing director, Emma Colin, commented: “National Apprenticeship Week provides a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of the apprentices but also the strong team on site supporting them. Attracting good new employees and inspiring them to progress in their chosen career is so important and it’s great to be able to offer people a variety of different routes into the industry.” Bovis Homes is part of the Vistry Group and the company currently employs 115 apprentices.
