Bovis Homes help students build career plans

Students at Bishop Heber High School in Malpas have been finding out that the house building industry isn't just about driving diggers and laying bricks - there are a whole host of career opportunities out there.

Representatives from Bovis Homes spoke to the sixth formers about the variety of jobs available in the construction industry and gave an insight into what it was like to work for one of the UK's leading home builders.

Architectural Designer, Stewart Ball, and Civil Engineer, Alex Harverson, spoke to the students, who will be going into their final school year in September, about the experiences they have had at Bovis Homes' Northern region and how they started in the industry.

Stewart said: "There are many different ways in which you can get into the industry and a huge variety of roles. I came from a military background, while Alex came straight from university, but there are also many people in the industry who started their career through apprenticeship schemes.

"The UK house building industry is one of the most important sectors in the UK and is rapidly expanding. There's always going to be a need for new housing and for many people, it's a job for life!"

The presentation gave the students a taster of the job roles in the industry, from legal and marketing, through to land buying and accounts and many students were eager to find out more.

Stewart continued: "At 17 and 18 years old, they've got to make some big career decisions and it's important to give them information about the opportunities available. It was great that we had the chance to give the students an insight into the house building industry and we were thrilled that they took such an interest."

Sue Griffith, Work Related Co-ordinator at Bishop Heber High School, said: "Students were keen to learn about specific job roles in many different areas of the industry and the presentation highlighted the diversity of the business and Bovis Homes. Feedback from the group was positive, inspiring students to further explore opportunities within construction and the different career routes available to securing employment."

Bovis Homes is currently building a selection of three, four and five bedroom homes at its Hampton Lea location in Malpas. The homes, built to traditional standards, are already attracting plenty of interest in the local market.
