Housebuilder stumps up £500 to sponsor Longstanton cricketers

- 07 Jun 22

A local housebuilder has stumped up funding to kit out players at Longstanton Grasshoppers Cricket Club for the second year in a row. Vistry East Midlands, which is building homes near the club at two locations in Northstowe, has given £500 as part of the sponsorship deal with the club. The club, which has six teams for players of various ages and abilities, will be using the money to buy equipment, such as helmets, pads, bats and balls, for the youth teams. The first and second team and three youth teams, which all play in Cambridgeshire Cricket Association leagues, will have new shirts carrying the housebuilder’s logo on the back. Club chairman Wayne Markillie said: “We were very happy when Vistry East Midlands decided to sponsor us last season and we are even happier now that they have extended that relationship by staying with us for another year. “This is a local club and the majority of our players come to us from the immediate surrounding area. We have had quite a few new players, parents and children, join us from Vistry’s Bovis Homes and Linden Homes developments in Northstowe just down the road. “This is wonderful because, as a club, we get a real boost from new members and the residents who have recently moved to the area get to make new friends and enjoy a sport that has everyone outside in the fresh air. This donation will enable us to invest in new kit for the players to give them a greater sense of pride when representing their local club on the field of play.” Vistry East Midlands is building homes at two locations in Northstowe, just over a mile from the Longstanton cricket ground in Over Road – Linden Homes’ The Boulevards development, off Stirling Road, and Bovis Homes at Northstowe, off Britannia Road. Katie Shepherd, field sales manager at Vistry East Midlands, said: “Cricket is the quintessentially English game that is played in villages up and down the country. The Longstanton Grasshoppers Club brings together many of the residents for exercise and provides the perfect platform for social interaction. “We see ourselves as very much part of the local community and are happy to be able to support the club which is one of the mainstays of village life.” For more information about the new homes being built at Northstowe, visit bovishomes.co.uk and lindenhomes.co.uk/eastmidlands.
