Bright future for Apprentice of the Year

Two big names in the building industry joined forces to support a young Maidstone carpenter by making sure he has the top tools for his trade.

Jake March, a second-year carpentry apprentice, was presented with over £2,500 worth of equipment to help him carve out a successful career from his employer, Bovis Homes, and builders' merchants, Jewson.

“We are only too pleased to help Jake out like this,” says Candice McCabe, regional marketing manager at Bovis Homes. “A good workman is only as good as his tools - and Jake has exceled since he joined us so deserves this support. We're delighted to be able to reward him for his dedication to the job by contributing towards his equipment.

“Jake was recently awarded the accolade of Apprentice of the Year for the Bovis Homes South East region and we're confident that he's got a great career ahead of him.”

Based at Bovis Homes'Orchard Fields, Barming location in Maidstone, Jake has been learning his skills on site as well as in college.

“I am still speechless that a conversation I had one early morning about the tools apprentices would really benefit from has had such a generous outcome,” says Jake. “I would like to say a big thank you to Bovis Homes for giving me a chance and all at Jewson for providing the tools and supporting me in my chosen career. I will put the tools to good use and make sure they are looked after.”

It can take months, if not years to build up a collection for the right tools for the job and Jake can be proud of his achievement. Another young person enjoying a career in construction is positive for all of us.”

Bovis Homes has recently taken on over 100 apprentices in both trade and office-based jobs. From carpentry, bricklaying and plumbing apprentices out on site, to positions in customer care, marketing and land in the regional offices, the youngsters are learning a range of skills which can help them to gain experiences needed for a successful career in construction.

“The UK housing industry is growing, there's always a need for new housing and for many people it's a job for life,” says Candice.
