A former bricklaying apprentice, who worked his way up to become site manager at a national housebuilder in Haslington, has impressed so much in the role that he has now won a prestigious award for construction quality.

Albert Hassall, based at Bovis Homes’ Hazelmere location, has won the National House Building Council (NHBC)’s Pride in the Job Quality Award, after being selected from more than 16,000 site managers across the UK.

Albert, who has worked at Bovis Homes for three years, said the work environment was a key factor when working at Hazelmere, which is situated on Crewe Road and is now in phase two, where a wildlife zone is being created.

“I’m over the moon!” Albert said. “It means everything to the team here and everyone on site feels so proud of our achievement.

“We have a lot going on, we are starting phase two at Hazelmere and we are trying to establish a wildlife zone. We have merged some existing ponds together, with some attenuation basins. We have ducks and ducklings, and also a resident herring!”

A total of six Bovis Homes colleagues won a Pride in the Job Quality Award across the country this year, matching last year’s number, which was the housebuilder's highest amount since 2004.

Pride in the Job celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality. After 12 many months of rigorous judging, these first round winners excelled and will now go on to compete for the Seal of Excellence Awards and Regional Winner titles.

Albert will be at the NHBC Pride in the Job North West region award ceremony, which takes place in Manchester on 11th October.

Joanne Morrison, regional managing director at Bovis Homes, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Albert and his team. He has worked so hard and this just goes to show where a trade apprenticeship can lead to.

“We all wish Albert the very best in the next round of the awards and whatever happens we’re very proud of the consistently high standards the Hazelmere team produce.”
