Housebuilders provide biodiversity enhancements for wildlife in Oxfordshire housing development

- 09 Jul 21

Vistry Group has committed to the protection and enhancement of wildlife and the ecological environment across two of its new locations in East Hanney, Oxfordshire. Both of Vistry’s housebuilder brands, Bovis Homes and Linden Homes, have taken action at the Silk Mill and Nurseries developments respectively. Bovis Homes has developed plans for a barn owl and bat roosting building on the Silk Mill site, specifically designed to provide safety and protection for these two species which are endangered in the UK due to loss of habitat. Furthermore, Bovis Homes has taken measures to preserve the current environment with the retention of existing trees and hedges, whilst also creating new habitats such as native hedgerows, wildflower-rich grassland and wetland, as well as taking additional protective measures during construction. In an industry-first initiative, Bovis Homes will also install hedgehog highways to its existing developments and future sites where possible. At the Linden Homes site, The Nurseries, Swift Bricks will be installed in six of the houses across the development which will feature two, three and four-bedroom homes. Swift Bricks are specifically designed building materials which provide nesting opportunities and protection for swifts, which are a declining species of bird in the country. Linden Homes will also construct various bird and bat boxes to be placed on houses and trees throughout the development. In addition to this, Linden Homes has donated £57,600 to the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment for off-site biodiversity enhancements – further benefitting the wildlife in the local area. Lynn Parker, programme manager at Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, said, “It is really encouraging to see the biodiversity work being carried out by Vistry Group, with a focus on some of the most endangered animals across our country. The payment made by Vistry will allow us to put further measures in place in the Vale of White Horse District Council area to create additional quality habitat for the wildlife we all know and love.” Sharon Nash, regional marketing manager at Vistry Group, said, “Over the last year or so I think we have all developed a greater appreciation of the outdoors and the natural world around us, and that we must do more as a collective to preserve this. “We are proud of the initiatives we have put in place for not just our new Oxfordshire developments, but for our wider portfolio moving forwards. House hunters will be able to take comfort in knowing they are moving to a development that has helped to protect the wildlife and environment around it.” For more information on Vistry Group locations in and around Oxfordshire, visit www.bovishomes.co.uk and www.lindenhomes.co.uk.
