Three colleagues from a Basingstoke-based housebuilder were looking to inspire hundreds of pupils at a Crowthorne school to get into the construction industry at a recent careers event.

The Bovis Homes trio, from the company’s Southern Counties region, attended Edgbarrow School’s Careers Convention to offer first-hand advice about the housebuilding sector and how to join it.

Matt Nicholls, commercial manager; Hollie Lockhart, marketing manager; and Alix Laflin, marketing assistant, took part in the event, which attracted students aged from 12 to 18.

Interested pupils included Josh Breare, who is in Year 10 and currently weighing up his career options, plus many others interested in apprenticeships and career paths such as engineering and architecture.

Josh said: “Visiting the Bovis Homes stand was extremely rewarding as I learnt about the different paths into the housebuilding industry and the job roles within it.

“Talking to the Bovis Homes representatives has definitely made me consider housebuilding as a potential career.”

Alix said pupils’ enthusiasm to learn more about housebuilding was a good sign for the industry’s future.

“There was a huge turnout and our stand gathered lots of interest, mainly students looking to do an apprenticeship - but there was also a lot of interest in product design, engineering and architecture,” she said.

“We answered questions from pupils of a wide range of ages, who wanted to know all about the roles within a housebuilder, the different departments, and the many routes youngsters can take to develop a career in the industry.”

Hayley Waldron, functional training manager at Bovis Homes, said those interested in a future at the housebuilder should visit the company’s dedicated careers website.

She said: “We’re always looking for new talent, across all our regions. Whether you’re a young person with bags of potential, or an older candidate with plenty of experience, we’d love to hear from you.”
