Lee relishing 'best job since leaving the Army' with Bovis Homes

Lee Wines believes his career in the Army has served him well in his new role as assistant site manager with Bovis Homes.

The former Lance Corporal fought for Queen and country on three tours of Iraq during his eight years in the Armed Forces.

Originally from south London, Lee was employed in a number of security roles after leaving the Army, providing protection for commercial shipping companies against the threat of Somali pirates.

His career in the military required communication, organisational and motivational skills, now being put to good effect in his new position as assistant to site manager Dave White at the Furlong Rise location in Cheltenham.

"My experience in the Army has helped in so many ways, including when I have needed to step up to site manager while Dave has been away," said Lee, who lives just a short walk from Furlong Rise.

"Not only do you learn the skills and knowledge required for your own rank in the Army, you also have to learn them for the rank immediately above, in case that person is incapacitated in a combat situation and you need to step up.

"That's what I've always done in my jobs outside of the Army, because I've always wanted to learn what my boss is doing.

"Eventually I'd like to be a site manager, so in my current role at Furlong Rise I'm trying to learn as much as possible every day from Dave, who is superb to work alongside.

"I know I can ask him for help if I'm unsure about something, even if I think it might be a stupid question, and he'll happily explain it to me.

"This is the best job I've ever had since leaving the Army. It's been good working with ex-Army lads in security, but in this job I'm constantly learning, and as long as I'm learning, I'm happy."

Bovis Homes has received the Silver Award from the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) for its commitment and support for UK Armed Forces personnel.
