Local housebuilder supports Sawtry litter picking group

A Sawtry housebuilder has stepped in to help a group of community-spirited volunteers keep the village clean and litter-free. In celebration of National Volunteers’ Week, which takes place annually between 1 June and 7 June, Bovis Homes supported volunteers from the Sawtry Litter Pickers Facebook group by sponsoring one of their rubbish-collecting events on Sunday 6 June. The developer, which is building new homes at Judith Gardens in the village, provided 18 volunteers with high-visibility vests to wear during the litter pick. Bovis Homes, part of Vistry Group, also donated £200 to the group’s supporting charity CARESCO, which provides a range of services and activities within the local community. National Volunteers’ Week is a celebration and recognition of the millions of people across the UK who make contributions though volunteering, including helpers of small grassroots organisations and larger charities. Tom Gosling, volunteer for the Sawtry Litter Pickers, said: “We can’t thank Bovis Homes enough for sponsoring this event, which has not only helped us to keep the village clean and protect the local environment, but has also kept the momentum of the group going. “The donation to CARESCO – a charity which is the heart and soul of the village - is invaluable, particularly in light of the pandemic, which has meant there have been fewer opportunities for fundraising events.” Facebook group Sawtry Litter Pickers was created in January, shortly after villagers united to respond to the national Great British Spring Clean initiative organised by Keep Britain Tidy. Since then, the volunteer group has grown to around 150 local people who regularly dedicate their time to collect rubbish around Sawtry. Weronika Maslak, sales manager for Vistry East Midlands, said: “As soon as we found out about the hard work of the Sawtry Litter Pickers, we knew we had to offer a helping hand and show our appreciation for the volunteers’ commitment. “Supporting the communities in which we build is of utmost importance to us, so we are really pleased to have backed the positive contribution being made by the litter pickers as well as the crucial local charity, CARESCO.” To get involved or to show support to the Sawtry Litter Pickers, visit facebook.com/sawtrylitterpickers or email sawtrylitterpickers@yahoo.com. Bovis Homes is currently building 295 properties at Judith Gardens, off Gidding Road, comprising a mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom houses.
