Maidstone pupils brighten up building site

The hoarding around a new development in Barming is now showing off the creative talent of local school children, as well as teaching passers-by about health and safety on a building site.

Six artistic students in the reception classes at Barming Primary School have seen their drawings blown-up and turned into graphics to adorn 20 metres of fencing around Bovis Homes' Orchard Fields location, following a competition held by the home builder.

Five-year-olds Keira, Chloe, Samuel, Harriet, Elliott and Chloe, and their classmates, were invited by Bovis Homes to create posters on the theme of site safety to go on the hoarding. After a tough judging process, the top three were chosen in each class and then the six winners were given the opportunity to visit their winning creations with their teachers and representatives from Bovis Homes.

"All the pictures which we saw were fantastic - they really took on board the site safety theme," says Annette Hurst, Sales and Marketing Director. "It's great to see the creations on the fencing - the boards are much brighter and more interesting and they are also highlighting the importance of safety on site.

"Health and safety is of the utmost importance in and around building sites, and it's important that children, from a young age, are aware of this. Creating these posters provided a fun and engaging way to teach the children about the dangers a building site can pose and what measures are put in place to ensure residents, contractors and staff are kept safe."

"With the new housing development being a prominent feature of the local community, we were delighted to be asked to create site safety posters for Bovis Homes," says Mrs Ingram, reception teacher at Barming Primary School.

"The children were extremely enthusiastic designing their posters and were keen to use their knowledge of construction site vehicles learnt during our 'Wicked Wheels' topic. We are really proud of all the children's creative achievements and found it really difficult to select the top three from each class. The children were very excited to see their posters being used in real life."

With a variety of designs and styles, the new homes at Orchard Fields have created a lot of interest in the local housing market. With a range of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, the popular location has already welcomed many of its new residents and is on its way to becoming a close-knit community.
