New Bicester community wins major design award

A Midlands housebuilder is celebrating after winning a prestigious design award for its work at Bicester.

Bovis Homes Central region, based in Coleshill, has been awarded the coveted 'Built for Life 12' award for their work on the new phase of their Kingsmere location (KM4).

"This is the first time we have won this award, and we are determined it won't be the last," said Design and Planning Manager David Laight. "We're very proud of our design work at Kingsmere and it is nice to receive external recognition like this.

"The award recognises that this new part of the Oxfordshire community will be a great place to live - well designed and sustainable - so anyone who moves in here at Kingsmere knows that they are coming to a place where their quality of life has been central to the design process.

"It shows we are doing things to a high standard and we are determined to keep striving hard to raise design quality."

Built for Life is a design quality initiative sponsored by the Home Builders Federation, Design for Homes, the Design Council and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

In judging the awards, all projects are rigorously assessed by renowned urban design specialists using a traffic light system against the 12 key 'benchmarks' which include access to local facilities, parking, character, landscaping and traffic management.

This new part of Kingsmere attained a full range of green lights to achieve the award and endorsement from Built for Life to use their quality kite mark. It has come to be regarded as the gold standard within the housebuilding industry and proves that a development has been planned to be highly attractive and sustainable, with a good community feel and public areas.
