Photographer Alex takes donations to Kenyan school

Group PR Photographer & Videographer, Alex Perkins, recently completed a once in lifetime trip to Kenya where he helped to re-build classrooms with a group of his fellow Aston Villa Fans. The experience saw Alex taking on some sanding and painting work on the school, as well as pitching in to teach basic maths and the alphabet to the pupils. The trip was organised by the Aston Villa Foundation which works to deliver projects and opportunities for communities both in Birmingham, where the Premiership team is based, and far beyond through partnerships such as with the organisation African Adventures. Alex had been excited about the prospect of the trip from the moment he saw it on LinkedIn. Unfortunately, he had to wait some time to go as it was postponed from the original date in 2020 due to the pandemic. On the 9th April 2022, Alex finally set off to Nakuru. The city is Kenya’s fourth largest city but is home to communities in which the cost of an education is out of reach for many. The group spent time with the community and Alex had the chance to do a home visit with one of the school children. Adding to the adventure Alex also visited the equator, a coffee plantation, and lake Nakuru national park for the safari. After reaching out to colleagues at Vistry to let them know of the upcoming trip, Alex had been able to gather an 18kg duffel bag full of donations to take with him and give to the community. This included pens, paper, books, clothes, and stationery and even some old Bovis branded rugby balls which would otherwise have gone to landfill. “I really appreciated that so many people from around Vistry helped me gather supplies for the trip,” said Alex. “These items can seem so small to us but make all the difference to these children. It was an eye-opening experience seeing how valued the things I brought were, as well as how much importance is put on access to education there.”
