Recycled materials help create eco-friendly play area at Hemel Hempstead school

Children at a school in Hemel Hempstead are enjoying a new play area that has been created using a range of recycled materials from a nearby construction site.

The play area at Two Waters Primary School is the result of a joint effort by Bovis Homes staff, project partners Osborne and other members of the local community, and demonstrates a unique use of recycled materials.

As part of the design of the new play park, extra effort was taken to reuse materials that had, for the most part, been generated by Bovis Homes and Osborne's work at the nearby redevelopment of the Manor Estate in Apsley.

The new attraction includes an arch made of recycled bottles, which creates different colours when the sun shines through it, a mud kitchen made using sinks, and a 'construction corner', with items donated from building sites.

 Other recycled materials include old tyres used to create a seating area, and pipes shaped into a musical display. The new play area also has a herb garden for sensory experiences and a concrete path created using the footprints of some of the pupils.

Bovis Homes' regional Technical Director Chris O'Connor , who helped to create the new play area, said: "This was a truly collaborative effort between Bovis Homes, Osborne and the local community, and together, using recycled materials, not only were we able to reduce waste from the construction process but also create something unique for the children. Consideration for the environment and working with communities are key parts of the way we work, and this new play area represents a powerful combination of these two things."

Two Waters Primary School is just a short distance from Bovis Homes' 325-home new location at Apsley, where Osborne's expert engineers are currently working on building a major new bridge over the East Coast railway line.
