Somerset-based Nigel Bunce spent four weeks thatching the four-bedroom Chestnut property - part of Bovis Homes’ new housing collection - at the housebuilder’s Priory Fields location, on Wookey Hole Road.

Jade Olds, sales advisor at Priory Fields, said: “The thatched roof really adds to Priory Fields’ character and it looks a lovely, stand-out property. We've had some great feedback from home buyers and current residents."

Nigel added that the thatched roof would provide excellent insulation and was a great sustainable option for new-build homes.

He said: “The more organic materials the better as far as I am concerned and the benefits of having a thatch include good insulation, aesthetics and helping a traditional craft to flourish within the modern building industry.

“My top tip for thatching a roof is finding a reputable thatcher who uses good quality material - preferably locally sourced - and consulting closely with your thatcher when designing your roof.”

The thatched roof in Wells is the first to be done by Bovis Homes in the UK, and there will be one more to follow at Priory Fields, along with two more at Blackmore Meadows in Stalbridge.

Properties in Bovis Homes’ new collection focus on well-proportioned exteriors with a real sense of light and flow on the inside.
