Wymondham pupils get lessons in nature thanks to nearby housing development

Children at a school in Wymondham have been learning all about local wildlife, thanks to an initiative from national house builder Bovis Homes and ecologists from The Ecology Consultancy.

The year three pupils at Browick Road Primary School were treated to an afternoon workshop for Key Stage 2 delivered by The Ecology Consultancy's expert team, finding out how to identify and classify different types of animals, from invertebrates through to mammals.

As part of the session, the children discovered how these different creatures adapt and evolve to deal with changes in their physical environment, as well as learning about what an ecologist does, and how the Ecology Consultancy works with house builders like Bovis on aspects of their development relating to wildlife.

The ecologists have been in Wymondham working at Bovis Homes' Birch Gate development, where 100 new two to five-bedroom homes are currently being built. The Ecology Consultancy is employed by Bovis Homes to help ensure that the development progresses in harmony with local wildlife and enhances their natural habitat wherever possible.

"We're delighted to have been able to arrange for our partners at The Ecology Consultancy to visit the pupils of Browick Road," said Annette Hurst, Regional Sales Director at Bovis Homes.

"With our new homes being built just a mile away, we're very proud to be part of the local community in Wymondham and to be supporting these young students in learning about some of the wonderful wildlife around them."

Corrina Peachment, Deputy Head Teacher at Browick Primary School, said: "The children found the ecology workshops really interesting. It was great for them to see their local area in a different light and they enjoyed learning about how different animals have adapted to their environments. The group activities encouraged the children to reason with each other and they enjoyed using their new knowledge to create imaginary animals that would suit a given environment."

Kevin Joyce, Assistant Ecologist at The Ecology Consultancy's Norfolk office said: "The children were captivated from start to finish and were particularly fascinated to find out about the wildlife in their local area and to engage in activities that helped them to explore ecological principles. They learnt about the work we do and how, together with our clients such as Bovis Homes, we carry out work to protect local wildlife for the benefit of generations to come."
